A GREEK police officer died during flash floods that inundated homes on the island of Evia. The floods have forced rescuers to use a helicopter to pluck stranded flood victims from rooftops. Police say an officer’s car was swept off a flooded road and into a nearby river. The body of the 39-year-old man was recovered early on September 12. A rescue helicopter aided the evacuation of stranded villages in southern Evia where flood victims sought shelter on terraces. Local authorities say dozens of homes and businesses have been flooded, several main roads have been cut off and a bridge has been destroyed following heavy overnight rainfall.
