London 2012 Olympics: Spice Girls to reunite for Olympic Closing Ceremony

Nineties girl band the Spice Girls have each forged successful solo careers, but sources imply they could reform for the first time since 2008 this summer and play at the Olympic Closing Ceremony.

The five singers, Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), will join other pop stars George Michael, The Who, Take That and Jessie J for the event on August 12.

The group will sing two songs, one of which is reported to be their 1996 hit single 'Wannabe' which was a number one in more than 30 countries.

Insiders say that Halliwell will wear the iconic Union Flag dress which she wore at the 1997 Brit Awards.

In a radio interview yesterday, Beckham confirmed that she would 'love nothing more' than to sing again with the rest of the group.

"I don't know about a comeback tour, but I loved being back with the girls ... we are very excited about the Olympics." she said.

A source has said that the Spice Girls were approached two years ago about performing in the ceremony: "It's always been on the cards, but Victoria's hectic work schedule, and the fact that she and Mel B live in the US have always been problematic until now."

Liam Gallagher will also perform at the closing ceremony according to reports. The singer will perform a rendition of the Oasis song 'Wonderwall' with his band Beady Eye.

Last week the Spice Girls also announced they had been working on a new musical. Viva Forever will feature several chart hits recorded by the group when they dominated the charts in the Nineties. The musical will open in the West End on December 11
