Karatzaferis says will write 'open letter' committing to government's task but is vague about terms

The leader of the rightwing Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS), Giorgos Karatzaferis, said on Friday that he would prepare an “open letter” in which he would commit to backing the coalition government’s reforms that are aimed at putting Greece back on the road to fiscal recovery.

Speaking to reporters outside the Maximos Mansion following talks with Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, Karatzaferis – who has shifted position several times on whether to provide written assurances to Greece’s foreign creditors – said that he would prepare an “open letter to the Greek people” confirming his party’s commitments to a tough economic reform program.

He said that he would send the same letter to the heads of the troika, referring to the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund “so that there is no pretext for the non-disbursement of the sixth tranche» -- a reference to an 8-billion-euro sum that Greece needs by mid-December.

But the rightwing leader fudged reporters’ questions about whether he would back all the policies and objectives of the program, including those which may have failed to yield anticipated results. “Europe is like a fireplace,” he said. “If you are too far from it, you are cold, but if you get too close you get burnt.”

Karatzaferis' comments came two days after New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras sent troika leaders a letter confirming his support for a new EU debt plan for Greece and for reforms linked to that but proposing some shifts in policy.

George Papandreou, the head of Socialist PASOK, gave his written support when he signed the debt deal October 26 as prime minister and is expected to repeat that support in a letter ahead of the next Eurogroup summit on Tuesday.

Greece's foreign creditors have said they want written guarantees from the leaders of all parties in the tripartite coalition as well as that of Papademos and Bank of Greece Governor Giorgos Provopoulos.
