New government shorty after noon: sources - The Best from Greece

The name of the new prime minister and composition of the new coalition government will be announced shortly after noon on Wednesday, sources have told the state-run Athens-Macedonian News agency.

 

The sources said that outgoing Prime Minister George Papandreou will be received by President Karolos Papoulias around noon, in order to tender his and his ministers' resignations.

 

Afterwards, the president will convene a meeting of political party leaders, after which the composition of the new government will be announced.

 

Papandreou was in his office until late on Tuesday in consultations with his close aides: Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos and the director of the premier's political office Nikos Athanassakis.

 

Parliamentary speakerPhilippos Petsalnikos, who was also in his own office until late Tuesday night, has categorically denied rumors that he had accepted a proposal to be the next prime minister. (AMNA)
