Union threatens to work only 5-day week unless new salary scale is extended

Guards employed at the country’s museums and archaeological sites have threatened to walk off the job on weekends – which would effectively close down all sites on Saturdays and Sundays – unless the government revokes new legal provisions that limits compensation for staff to a five-day week, Skai has learned.

“Following the failure of the Culture Ministry and other competent bodies to find a way of paying wages for work done by guards beyond the five-day week referred to in the new salary scale, we find ourselves obliged to immediately limit our employment to a five-day week,” the national union representing the guards said in a statement.

The statement called on authorities to solve the problem as soon as possible, suggesting that otherwise the nation’s museums and ancient sites would be closed to visitors at weekends
