Olympiakos scores 1-0 away win for the Champions League
Olympiakos produced a priceless 1-0 victory at Marseille on November 23 to stay alive in the chase for a spot in the knock-out stages of the Champions League. Yiannis Fetfatzidis gave a glimpse of his rare talent by scoring the game’s only goal at the Velodrome when he struck a powerful shot from the left eight minutes from time, in what was arguably the Greek champion's best performance in the competition so far this season. The win has lifted Olympiakos to the third spot in the group with six points, one behind second-placed Marseille and two ahead of Borussia Dortmund, with the Reds set to host Arsenal (who has already topped the group) in their last game on December 6. Olympiakos did not fear the game at all and started from kick-off with an attacking style that often had the hosts pegged at the back for fear of conceding a goal. The French may have enjoyed more possession but it was Olympiakos who missed the biggest chances through Kevin Mirallas. Using defender Yiannis Maniatis in midfield, coach Ernesto Valverde managed to overcome the injury crisis in the halfway line as Olympiakos visited Marseille without some of its best midfielders: Ariel Ibagaza, Jean Makoun and Pablo Orbaiz. The Reds’ confidence grew as the game went on and they capped their superiority with an exquisite effort by substitute Fetfatzidis, who had only been on the pitch for seven minutes. Eventually the Reds held on to celebrate a rare away win in the competition that can see them through to the last 16 if combined with victory over Arsenal next month in Piraeus.
