Fred Boissonnas is the first foreign photographer to travel extensively in Greece from 1903 and for almost three decades onwards. He toured from Crete to Mount Olympus and from Ithaca to Mount Athos. He traveled, photographed and wrote. A pioneer whose work was decisive for the development of the Greek photographic scene during the 20th century. This is Fred Boissonnas, the man who contributed to the formation of the European public opinion concerning Greece during the mid-war period by presenting a panorama of the country with his photographs and albums.
In this exhibition the works presented are from his last two trips to Mount Athos. His photographs are a unique testimony of his life in the Athonite community during the mid-war years. His works from the trips in Mount Athos reveal the religious life, as well as the architecture of the monasteries and the predominance of the natural elements.
The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography is the depository of the Fred Boissonnas photographic archive related to Greece (Hellenic Culture Organization). Other information
