The Athens marathon is the first of its kind in the world and is continued in honor of the messenger who ran from the town of Marathon to Athens in order to advise that the Greek army had defeated the Persians during the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. The marathon now features various shorter races as well, but the main race spans 42 km!
