The 2009 ATHENS CLASSIC MARATHON, dedicated to the pacifist Grigoris Lambrakis for the last 27 years, is not just one more international, popular race.
It is the One race that offers the experience of running the original Marathon course, starting from the Marathon Town and finishing in the Panathinaikon Stadium. It is the Marathon Race that uniquely combines the past with the present; the myth with history.
The Athens Classic Marathon is the race that promotes the diachronic values of Olympic ideals, expresses the need of the mankind for world peace, emblems the power of human mind and will, enhancing at the same time sports as an alternative way of living and thinking. Nowadays, through a chaste annual ceremony taking place within the sacred area of the Marathon Tomb, the race has established its own international symbol of world peace, the “Marathon Flame”, bringing out in the most intense way the messages that this race carries.
The Athens Classic Marathon is the largest and most important sport event of Greece and has a distinctive role in the world sports scene. The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) awarded its high level of organization, granting the IAAF Silver Label 2009 status to the Athens Classic Marathon, while the Association of International Marathon and Distance Races (AIMS), recognizing the unique history of our country has decided, since 2007, the annual organization of an International Marathon Symposium, in the Marathon Town, the day before the Athens Classic Marathon race.
The Athens Classic Marathon Organizing Committee, wishing to give everyone the opportunity to gradually face the challenge of the 42,195m, has also established a Power Walking race, held on the Marathon course, as well as two more road races (5 & 10km Road Races), held in the Athens historical centre. These races, as well as shorter races addressed to children and athletes with intellectual disabilities (Special Olympics), allow everyone to participate in this city celebration and experience the joy of completing a race in the Panathinaikon Stadium.
SEGAS (the Hellenic Athletics Federation) and the Athens Classis Marathon Organizing Committee invite you all to participate in this event, and run on the footsteps of the legendary messenger of Ancient Athens, of the Olympic Champion Spyros Louis, of the Balkan Champion Grigoris Lambrakis.
