THE STATE Theatre of Northern Greece is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a production entitled Mikra Dionysia, which began on September 22 and constitutes a theatrical journey through the years, linking elements of ancient drama performances in various theatres throughout Greece.

Mikra Dionysia, a theatrical mosaic directed by Yiannis Rigas and Grigoris Karantinakis, consists of 21 excerpts of ancient dramas which the theatre has presented over the past five decades rolled into one production. Among the featured works are Sophocles’ Antigone and Electra, Euripides’ Eleni and Aristophanes’ Lysistrata.

Oediupus, Prometheus, Cassandra, Agamemnon, Orestes and Cyclops are some of the characters who are “invited” onto the stage, where they converse with an unsung hero from behind the scenes of the theatre troupe, a technician played by Yiorgos Armenis.

Mikra Dionysia rounds off the theatre’s summer production cycle.

On at the National Theatre of Northern Greece’s Vasiliko Theatre (Lefkos Pyrgos Square) in Thessaloniki through October 2. Performances Thursday to Sunday at 9pm; also matinee performances on September 25 and October 2 at 7pm. Tickets cost 10 to 15 euros. Telephone bookings on 2315-200-200 .
