Four of the 10 top sellers at a Sotheby's European Paintings auction in London on Tuesday were the works of Greek artists.
The sale was the first in which Greek paintings, previously auctioned in a separate sale, were sold in the European Paintings auction. The sale brought together some 242 works that also comprised Spanish, Scandinavian, German, Austrian and central European works. The top Greek seller was Nikolaos Gyzis' "The Dance of the Nymphs", which was sold for 308,433 euros, followed by Theodoros Rallis’ "The Sleeping Concubine", which reached 224,711 euros, more than double the initial asking price of 80-120,000 euros. Nikos Engonopoulos' "Alexander, Son of Philip, and the Greeks apart from the Spartans" was sold for 173,197 euros, and Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas' "Countryside" fetched for 173,197 euros.
