REALITY spills over into fiction in artist George Hadjimichalis’ series of new works, presented in an exhibition that opened on November 9 at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens. Entitled George Hadjimichalis. The Painter AK. A Novel, the multimedia show tells the story of a fictional novelist, known only by his initials AK, whom Hadjimichalis has envisioned. Through the works, which include more than 300 paintings of varying sizes, a 50m2 installation and a black-and-white video, visitors will learn about the life of this imaginary writer.
Engaging in a form of retrospective narrative interspersed with autobiographical elements, Hadjimichalis explores subjects such as the human body and spirit, illness, loss, psychosis and mortality.
Since graduating from St Martin’s School of Art in London in 1975, the diverse Athens-born artist has staged numerous solo shows at galleries and contemporary art institutions in Greece and beyond, including a 2002 appearance at MoMA PS1, the boldly experimental arm of New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
In 2005, Hadjimichalis represented Greece at the Venice Biennale, while his latest exhibition forms part of the museum’s EMST Commissions 2011 series.
