Athens Photo Festival 2011

Creative young shutterbugs new to the arts scene will share exhibition space with established masters of the lens at the Athens Photo Festival 2011, to be launched at the Technopolis complex in Gazi on November 2. The annual event, which is celebrating an impressive 25 years of existence, has an international flavour as it features both Greek and foreign photographers.

Expect to see a tribute to Greek postwar photographer Costas Balafas as well as contemporary visions created by emerging local and international talent. Among them is Lisa Elmaleh, who lugs around a large-format camera and portable dark room and uses the 19th-century ferrotyping technique to create a vintage look. The young American photographer will present her latest works (photo), in which she captures musicians who appear to be plucked out of another era.

Organised by the Hellenic Centre for Photography, the festival also features an array of interesting parallel events and shows - many beyond the main venue, such as master classes with British documentary photographer Simon Norfolk and inventive New York-based conceptual illustrator Viktor Koen.
