The list of "must-sees" is long. Here is a careful selection:
The Acropolis is surely the must-see by definition. It is easy to reach either by walking up from the Monastiraki Metro station, the Syntagma Metro station or directly from the Acropolis Metro Station [www.cityofathens.gr/en/athens-maps]
Included in the ticket for Acropolis are some other archaeological sites, such as the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora and the Library of Hadrian. The new Acropolis Museum is best accessible from the Acropolis Metro station.
Once already close to the Acropolis a relaxing walk through Plaka is worth the time. The picturesque quarter has been able to retain its original Athenian charm. The taverns offering traditional Greek cuisine are a popular place to take a rest from the day’s visits. Plaka is also the region to watch out for souvenirs. The visitor should also take a step in the one or other side street to discover the tranquil atmosphere.
The national Museum of Archeology with its important collection of artefacts from all periods is a further must-see for the historically interested. It is located on the street 28th Oktovriou and can be best reached either from Omonia Metro Station or Victoria Metro Station [www.cityofathens.gr/en/athens-maps]
For the ones continuing from Rafina to the Cycladic Islands the Museum of Cycladic Art might be of great interest. Close to the Museum of Cycladic Art is the famous Benaki Museum. This museum is worthwhile visiting for those interested in Greek history beyond the ancient times. Both museums are very close to the area of Kolonaki, which is the chic and elegant inner city quarter.
Especially in the evenings Lykavetous, the highest Athenian mountain, is a great place to be. This is probably the best place for a romantic sunset in the City. The top of the mountain can be reached by a cable-way.
The best choice for a good night out is either Psiri (close to Monasteraki Metro station) or Gazi (around Keramikos Metro station). Both areas host a wide range of bars, clubs, restaurants, fast food places and theatres
