Theatre
On the pine-covered Philopappou Hill, opposite the Acropolis, a 900-seat open-air theater was built especially for the "Dora Stratou" company. The stage was designed by famous Greek painter Spyros Vassiliou. The floor is very large in order to allow the free evolution of dancers, just like in a village square or dance-field. Within the 25-acre theater area, a hall was also built, used for winter rehearsals, courses and workshops
Activities
Greek dance classes during the winter season. Lectures, workshops, research programs. Copies of folk costumes made to order. Library, collections and archives.
Numerous publications: books, albums, postcards, CDs, CD-ROMs, T-shirts, posters etc. Close cooperation with the International Dance Council CID, UNESCO.
Training in the Dora Stratou Dance Theatre
The Dora Stratou Dance Theatre in Athens accepts trainees in cultural management, arts administration, general management, international relations, dance theatre management, costumes mainainance.
The Theatre is an institution of international repute since 1953, unique in its kind in the world. It employs over 10 qualified persons in administration and has a permanent professional dance and music company of 75, assisted by one hundred volunteers. Its school has over 600 adult students.
Trainees have the opportunity to learn about managing a large productive institution in the arts, while working alongside its highly experienced staff. The list of activities of this theatre is long and varied - see below or visit our website.
Trainees are also required to contribute to the daily operation of the International Dance Council CID, the official world-wide organization for all forms of dance, at UNESCO. The office mainains contacts with members in 150 countries.
President is Dr. Alkis Raftis, professor of management at the Universities of Patras and Paris, now retired. Trainees work under Ms. Adamantia Angeli, Executive Secretary, an economist.
Conditions for trainees
- Trainees must have personal funds to cover their travel and living expenses in Athens. They do not receive payment. They receive pocket money starting at 5 euros a day and increasing with experience on the job.
- They must have a working knowledge of English or French; other languages are a plus, especially non-European languages.
- They must be covered in Greece by their own insurance.
- Trainees must be present in the Theatre premises 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. They must be available to assist in organizing special events outside office hours.
- Trainees assist in all the activities of the Theatre, and attend free of charge performances, classes, lectures, festivals, exhibitions, international congresses etc.
- The main objective is to aquire detailed knowledge about how the numerous activities of this theatre are carried out, by working as assistants alongside its staff and carrying out various tasks as required by our daily operation.
- We are also interested in trainees assisting in traditional costume maintenance.
- The period of training can be any time of the year, any duration over 2 months.
- Requirement for application is a detailed CV (resume, bio, profile) including studies, experience, preferred type of work, photo etc. Also, proof of insurance.
- Trainees join the International Dance Council CID-UNESCO upon our recommendation. As CID Members they will receive an additional certificate of training by CID, since our offices are also functioning as CID President's Office.

It has 900 seats and was built specially for the Dora Stratou Dance Company.
On foot: From the Plaka district, take the pedestrian street towards St. Dimitrios Loumbardiaris and keep following the signs.
By metro: Stations "Acropolis" or "Petralona".
By bus: Take trolley bus 15 till the "Platia Philopappou" stop.
By car: Drive around Philopappou Hill, starting at the "Dionysos" restaurant opposite the Acropolis; there is a spacious parking lot adjacent to the theatre
In the idyllic surroundings of Philopappou Hill, opposite the Acropolis, in the Dora Stratou garden-theatre, every night regional cultures come to life. 75 dancers, singers and folk musicians reenact folk songs, musical instruments and dances in authentic local costumes, offering a wonderful spectacle and illustrating the continuity of ancient traditions.
