The engraver Christos Santamouris is not simply a diaspora Greek. With his contribution to culture, he has given a fresh impulse to what the modern Greek is all about. When we think about his oeuvre, it is like a treasure of art jewels been emptied from the box opposite our feet. A Greek horn of Amaltheia!

Santamouris is not simply an exponent of the two-dimensions, not merely a craftsman of art books, not only forming a totally new language through surprising engraving techniques. He has been also a teacher of engraving in Paris as well as Tinos Island / Greece for many years now. After his successful presentations in Antwerp, and also the one in Creta last summer, to honour the 100 years of the writer P. Prevelakis, we see today a new shine of works at the 'Periple' gallery located opposite the European Parliament in Brussels.

His works in white relief paper with inlaid printing metal characters from the old, have been a surprise contribution in the European art scene when it was firstly launched. These new pieces are not simply 'framed' colour works of the many we have seen; they are a vibrating craftsmanship. They advocate principals of the ancient values which are more necessary today as much as they were then.

Moreover different works of him, like the writings of the celebrated N. Kazantzakis, as well as other historic figures, have inspired Christos Santamouris to create a life out of spirit. The art of engraving here, has been the means, as a projection of the written word, to announce to the wider public- as it is the case with books, the secret words on image and beyond. Write and Scribe. Cooperation of the two 'sister souls', if I may say here, in order to help this troubled humanity of ours to proceed. We have seen the works, and this type of presentations of Santamouris can make Brussels the city for which you have a reason to pay a visit. The exhibition will remain open until the 24th of December 2009.

Location: Gallery 'Periple', 115, Rue Froissart, 1040 Etterbeek Brussels, Belgium
